What is CLEP?  (credit-by-exam)

Introduction to the CLEP Exams

If you are looking to save time, avoid unnecessary tuition costs, and place out of introductory college courses, then the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is for you! CLEP is your path to earning college credit for a fraction of the cost and time of typical college courses without sacrificing the quality of your education. CLEP offers 33 different subject exams, ranging from U.S. History to College Composition, from Psychology to College Algebra. The American Council on Education approves and certifies the exams and The College Board administers the CLEP program. Almost 3,000 institutions of higher education accept passing CLEP scores; at most schools, each CLEP exam substitutes for at least three credit hours.

Although CLEP exams have been available for over 40 years, CLEP is still the best-kept secret in higher education. CLEP exams free up time and money for the more important things, such as, holding a job, raising a family, or pursuing more advanced coursework. CLEP is a widely accepted method of earning college credits and is recognized by all of the regional accreditation agencies.

Over 600 faculty members from institutions across the country help develop these exams by writing exam questions, setting score standards, and establishing credit-granting policies. The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends the minimum scores for awarding credits.

Another great thing about the CLEP is its availability; the 33 exams are offered at over 1,700 testing centers throughout the United States and the rest of the world, including special testing centers for the men and women of the United States military. Since the CLEP is administered via computer, it can be offered at almost any time of day on any day of the week. When you register for the exam, you should have no trouble finding a convenient testing location and date. Convenient, cost-effective, and efficient: all qualities that make CLEP attractive to motivated people. If earning college credit without wasting money or time sounds like a good option for you, take a moment to explore the details of EduNation’s CLEP Prep Study Program. We think you'll agree with the hundreds of other students and professionals who have put EduNation and CLEP to work for them!

Who Should Consider Taking a CLEP Exam?

The CLEP exams were developed to allow motivated individuals to earn college credit. At present, almost 3,000 institutions of higher education accept CLEP exams as a substitute for classroom time. This makes the CLEP exams a great option for those hoping to avoid redundant courses; working professionals looking for advancement; and even high school students wanting to get a jump on college! Students who have acquired knowledge through a job, or individual pursuit can place out of introductory college courses. Students who have limited finances for college can minimize their costs by earning college credits through CLEP.

The CLEP exams are especially popular with students who have been home-schooled. Working students, who need to earn a college degree, but have less time to devote to their studies, can earn introductory or elective credits by passing a CLEP test. Individuals who have studied overseas can use the CLEP exams to demonstrate their expertise and avoid repetitious classes. Finally, many members of the military find that CLEP allows them to work towards a degree while they serve. CLEP works for anyone who wants to reduce the time and expense to earn college credits.

Receiving Credit for a CLEP Exam

Each institution sets its own CLEP credit granting policy. In other words, each institution determines which exams and the required scores it will accept. Depending on your college's CLEP policy, a satisfactory score on each CLEP exam can earn you 3, 6 and even up to 12 credits.

Click here to see if your college accepts credit by exam. Additionally, our Academic Advisors can assist you in determining which courses fit the requirements of your desired degree path. It is necessary to make sure that your institution of choice will honor your passing score.

Before registering for a CLEP exam you should inquire about the CLEP policies at any schools you might attend. There are differences in CLEP policies between institutions. Be sure to acquire a full description of protocol from each school. Many schools will not accept passing CLEP scores if the student has failed a class in that subject area in the past. Because of all these policy differences, it is important for you to carefully examine institutional CLEP policy before registering for an exam.

Typically, an institution lists all its academic policies, including CLEP policies, in its general catalog. You'll probably find the CLEP policy statement under a heading such as Credit-by-Examination, Transfer Credit, or CLEP Policy. If you can't find this information, ask the registrar's office for a copy of the school's CLEP policy.

The CLEP scoring system is easy to use. Immediately after you finish your exam, you will receive an unofficial score report with a detailed summary of your performance on all aspects of the exam (except for any essays). You can request to have your scores sent to any school, employer, or certifying agency free of charge. If you have not yet decided where to send your scores, they are compiled on your CLEP transcript, which remains available for twenty years. You can request a copy of your CLEP transcript at any time.

Importance of CLEP Study Material

Some students find it useful to use CLEP preparation study materials. EduNation’s eLearn system includes study questions, practice exams, comprehensive subject specific content, and innovative study tools. EduNation’s CLEP prep study materials are a great roadmap for what you need to know. For instance, many students who are trying to place out of a subject they took in high school simply use their textbook and class notes. If you plan to do this, be sure the content covered by your course materials is the same as the content covered by the exam. Our EduNation eLearn system does just that. We wrote it to reflect the content of the actual CLEP exam, based on the course outlines provided by The College Board, which administers the program.

Again, our comprehensive CLEP prep study system helps you identify any weak areas in your knowledge base. Study questions and practice exams indicate the types of facts and ideas likely to appeal to CLEP test-makers.

The amount of studying you need to do will depend on how recently and how well you learned the material included in the CLEP test. In some cases, the material covered by the exam may be different than the material covered in a corresponding high school course. For instance, the CLEP Psychology exam may have a broader scope than the average high school psychology syllabus. For this reason, it may be necessary for you to learn new subject material. EduNation’s state-of-the-art CLEP prep materials and study method will give you the edge needed to successfully challenge and pass given CLEP exams.
